  1. Excellent choices. I would add Jim Carter, Simon Williams, Alan Cummings, Tom Hollander, and Michael Gambon.

Two big thumbs up for Michael Kitchen, Helen Mirren, Bill Nighy and Judi Dench.

  2. Do you allow deceased actors? Jeremy Brett and John Thaw are two of my favourites and I also like David Jason (who, of course, is alive).

  3. Great additions! All actors are welcome!

  4. I believe Gwyneth Paltrow would not be considered to be a British actor...even though she sometimes resides in the UK with her husband and children.

  5. Gwyneth is definitely not British. Actually, I sneaked a few non Brits in. Judy Davis and Geoffrey Rush are Australian and Cillian Murphy is Irish, so I slipped in the "mostly British". I should have found at least one Canadian as well! Hmmmm. I will have to ponder that one.

  6. great favourites and i'm sure that you will be adding more British (and otherwise) actors to your list. but there's hardly any British actor that i've seen in period dramas that i've not liked. and i find that once i've discovered them in the drama - i tend to like them in everything else they are in (maybe not the movie)

I prepared a whole list of some actors I admire and I wanted to add them to your awesome list. But I found out most of them are not Brittish as I thought. Cate Blanchett is Australian, Saoirse Ronan (Atonement, The Way Back) is Irish, Christopher Plummer (The Last Station, Alexander, A Beautiful Mind...) is Canadian and Ewan McGregor is Scottish :-). So that leaves Eddie Redmayne (Tess of the D'Urbervilles, The Pillars of the Earth, My Week With Marilyn)...

    1. '..and Ewan McGregor is Scottish" !!!

Scottish IS British! As is N.Irish, Welsh, as well as English. What DO you think 'Britain' or 'British' means??? Well, just for you (and any others who are oblivious):
Britain is: Scotland, England, N.Ireland, Wales (not necessarily in that order). Pass it on to whomever your fellow-countrymen happen to be (I'm guessing American, as this is where this misapprehension seems to originate).

Oh, I forgot Rupert Friend (Pride and Prejudice, The Young Victoria)!!!

  10. Agree with all of them!
A favourite of mine is Andrew Buchan(Garrow's law). I was lucky enough to see him on stage together with Eddie Redmayne last January in London(Richard II)and they both bowled me over!
Another one missing is Rupert Graves(also in Garrow's law)who unfortunately seems to be doomed lately to play villains...but he does it very well.
Blake Ritson plays a wonderful cameo in the last episode of Garrow's law, such a shame it was cancelled.

  11. Could I suggest Barun Sobti - if you don't watch Indian soaps you might not know of him, but if you like Richard Armitage in the role of John Thornton you will love him.

  15. I'm now becoming officially addicted to your blog. Is there a recognized treatment plan?!

I was scrolling down your very comprehensive list of marvellous actors and was starting to dispair that Richard Armitage wasn't one of your favorites. Alas, my fear was lifted as his handsome face popped into view!

There are a few unfamiliar names so I have some IMDB trolling to do this evening. Cheers.

    1. Hi Elaine. Such kind words! Richard Armitage is a particular weakness of mine. Sigh!
So glad to have you as a regular visitor.
      Cheers!

    1. Ralph Fiennes. Duly noted! I also love his brother Joseph if only for Shakespeare in Love.
      Thanks for the addition.

  17. For the token Canadian, I would nominate Megan Follows (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001227/?ref_=fn_al_nm_5) for her portrayal of Anne of Green Gables, among many other fabulous performances both on stage and screen. I believe that she's our "Maggie Smith" and that there will be many more fabulous performances (perhaps in historical dramas) to come! If you're fortunate enough to catch her on stage, it's an amazing experience.

  19. Jeremy Irons? Tom Hiddleston, may be? Just seeing Dawn French's picture made me want to watch 'The Vicar' series again :-) That reminds me to mention my absolute heartthrob Richard Armitage. Glad to see you like him too.

  20. Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Hans Matheson. Love all the above too!x

  21. I'm not British, but I seem to find that British actors are generally a cut above the rest. May have something to do with the education and refinement. I love the understatement and the sheer intelligence that comes across in most British performances.
I'm heartbroken though that you didn't include Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman - two of my absolute favourites!
