Hello and welcome to The Jane Austen Film Club. My pen name is Jenny Allworthy (a small joke- only one English Lit prof has laughed so far). I am actually a Canadian optometrist whose passion is period drama, film adaptations of 19th century literature in particular .
My obsession continued with travel to the UK and then really took off when I saw the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. Then Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility, Gwyneth Paltrow's Emma and Amanda Root in Persuasion came along and I happily read all of Jane Austen's novels along with her letters, juvenilia and numerous biographies.
I have since read and viewed adaptations of many other authors such as George Elliot, Mrs. Gaskell, Anthony Trollope, Edith Wharton, Thackeray, Hardy...the list is endless. And that is why I am still writing this blog three years later. Apparently, there is still lots of material old and new to discuss in the world of period drama.
So again, welcome and please leave comments. I love to hear from all of you and I respond to as many as I can.
